New Violence Free Face

Kia ora

My name is Corrinne Oliver, I am the newly appointed Violence Free Wairarapa Coordinator.

I would like to acknowledge my predecessor John Slater.  Hard shoes to fill, as I’m sure most of you would know.   John did an awesome job for raising the profile of the campaign. We wish John all the best in his new endeavors & look forward to him popping in from time to time for a cuppa.

My husband Bruce & I share 8 children, the youngest being 10 & the oldest being 36.  We both have experience in Step-parenting & are very proud of our children.  They all live non-violent lives which for a parent I feel is one of the greatest attributes our children can have.  With that goes a concern for others & a healthy respect for self, this is very important.

My background in working in the Family Violence arena is over 10 years work for Wairarapa Women’s Refuge.  During that time I was the Childcare worker, then Tauiwi Coordinator, Trainer & Roster Worker.  Women’s Refuge along with many other organizations relies on their Volunteers for many things.  If you have a few spare hours & would like to help a community group give them a call I’m sure that they’d appreciate it.

I also worked for the Wairarapa Women’s Center, as Coordinator, another awesome community Organisation that can do with a few more volunteers.  I started in these organizations as a volunteer & ended up with paid employment.

My personal growth during these times was huge.  I gained the courage to further my education & work on my own personal growth.  I learnt not to accept second best, why not have the best.

In 2000 I then entered UCOL to complete my National Certificate in Computer Graphics, to take these skills into my husbands business & support him due to ill health.

I started to pick up some tutoring work the following year at the Women’s Centre as I found I really missed working with people in our community.  I tutor TIPS parenting for REAP & contract a Self Awareness Programme for Women.  I have just completed a Self Awareness programme funded by the Wairarapa Women’s Centre, for Turret House Presbyterian Support Services in Featherston.

I am employed by Masterton Safe & Healthy Community Council for 30 hours a week.  This is my 6th week in the job & I finding that everyday is different, I get the opportunity to meet with some incredible people in our community.  Yes we have shocking stats for our community, but we also have some amazing dedicated people working at the coal face.  I will introduce them to you via this column over the year.
